Accessibility

Pelivan Transit provides public transit within six counties of Northeast Oklahoma. Vans and shuttle buses are accessible to clients with disabilities serve all regularly scheduled routes. Pelivan Transit on demand service vans and shuttles are accessible to persons with disabilities. Features such as, lifts for riders with walkers, mobility device securement areas and priority seating areas, ensure equal access on routes. Our vans are equipped with features that allow the vehicles to be lowered for easier access for ambulatory riders with disabilities, or those using assisting devices such as walkers, canes and crutches. To use the lift, or assist with mobility device securement, please ask the operator to deploy the device.

In addition to the mechanical devices, van and shuttle routes provide the flexibility to travel at any time during Pelivan Transit’s regular hours of operation with on demand response.

ADA COMPLIANT

The ADA is one of America’s most comprehensive pieces of civil rights legislation that prohibits discrimination and guarantees that people with disabilities have the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in the mainstream of American life --to enjoy employment opportunities, to purchase goods and services, and to participate in State and local government programs and services.

Therefore, Transit providers must carry a mobility device and occupant if the lift and vehicle can physically accommodate them, unless doing so is inconsistent with legitimate safety requirements. “Legitimate safety requirements” include such circumstances as a wheelchair of such size that it would block an aisle, or would be too large to fully enter a railcar, would block the vestibule, or would interfere with the safe evacuation of passengers in an emergency.

Service Animals

Service animals are animals that are individually trained to perform tasks for people with disabilities such as guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling mobility devices, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, or performing other special tasks. Service animals are working animals, not pets.

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), businesses and organizations that serve the public must allow people with disabilities to bring their service animals into all areas of the facility where customers are normally allowed to go. This federal law applies to all businesses open to the public, including restaurants, hotels, taxis and shuttles, grocery and department stores, hospitals and medical offices, theaters, health clubs, parks, and zoos. If a passenger needs special arrangements they may contact the nearest Dispatch Center.

The only service animals allowed on the Pelivans will be those animals required for the aid of the rider beyond the transport for mobility purposes such as a Seeing Eye Dog. Comfort animals such as rabbits, boas, lizards, etc, used for psycho-therapies are not permitted on the Pelivans.

Also, transporting pets in carriers to the Vet is not permitted. The threat of animal dander to other rider’s allergies may require using only one assigned Pelivan in your service area for animal transport. Please refer any known public allergy requests to ride a different Pelivan or wear a mask to protect their breathing.
